BLACKSBURG, Va. – In the final match of the regular season, the 36th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell 7-0 to rival Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

The ‘Hoos (20-2, 11-0 ACC), ranked fourth in the country, earned the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Mitchell Frank and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski teamed up to give Virginia their first win of the day with an 8-5 victory over Tech’s Jai Corbett and Nic Wilson in No. 3 doubles. Virginia clinched the point in the No. 2 match, where the 55th-ranked duo of Alex Domijan and Harrison Richmond used a tiebreaker to top Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro of Virginia Tech, 8-7 (7-3).

Virginia Tech’s (13-10, 5-6 ACC) 43rd-ranked pair of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini gave the Hokies their lone victory, defeating UVA’s 44th-ranked team of Luca Corinteli and Mac Styslinger 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles match.

In singles action, the Cavaliers’ Justin Shane defeated the Hokies’ Aaron Gomez 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles match. The No. 1 singles match featured a clash of two players ranked in the top 25 in the country. Virginia’s 17th-ranked Domijan outlasted Tech’s 21st-ranked Contini, 7-5, 6-3, extending the Cavalier lead to 3-0.

UVA clinched the match in No. 3 singles, where 45th-ranked Ryan Shane topped Koontz, 6-0, 7-5.

In No. 4 singles, the Hokies’ Monteiro lost a close, three-set match to the ‘Hoos’ 122nd-ranked Kwiatkowski. Kwiatkowski grabbed the opening set, 6-2, before Monteiro won the second, 6-1. Kwiatkowski then won the deciding third set, 6-3.

Tech’s 119th-ranked Bjerrehus gave Virginia’s Frank, who is the second-ranked player in the nation, all he could handle in the No. 2 singles match. Bjerrehus went ahead early, winning the first set, 6-3. Frank then came back to win the second, 6-3, before taking the third, 6-2.

In the final match of the day, the Cavaliers’ J.C. Aragone topped Tech’s Corbett 7-5, 7-5 in No. 5 singles.

The win was Virginia’s 118th consecutive win in conference play.

Virginia Tech will return to this week for the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C. The seeding will be released Sunday evening.
