GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech sophomore Amerigo Contini has been named the ACC Male Tennis Player of the Week as announced on Tuesday by the league office.
Contini went undefeated in singles on the week as the Hokies tallied a 2-1 record, defeating No. 48 VCU and No. 23 Wake Forest. In the first match of the week, Contini helped the Hokies seal the 5-2 win over VCU, picking up a point in the No. 1 singles by defeating No. 64 Alexis Heugas, 7-5, 6-1.
The Hokies claimed a hard-fought 4-3 win later in the week against No. 23 Wake Forest. The deciding point came down to Contini’s match against 34th-ranked Romain Bogaerts. Contini overcame a 4-1 deficit in the opening set to win, 6-4. Bogaerts then grabbed the second set, 7-5, before Contini used a late break to take the final set, 7-5, securing the team win.
In the Hokies’ final match of the week, Contini defeated No. 52 Austin Powell of NC State. Falling 7-6 (7-5) in the opening set, Contini came back strong to take the next two 6-3, 6-1.
This marks the second ACC Player of the Week honor for the Hokies this season after Andreas Bjerrehus won on April 1. It is the second Player of the Week honor for Contini in his career.
Contini and the Hokies will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 11 when Tech faces in-state ACC rival Virginia. Match time is set for 11 a.m. at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
