BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 42nd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will host 48th-ranked VCU in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

The Hokies (11-8, 4-4 ACC) split their two road matches last weekend, defeating 64th-ranked Georgia Tech 5-2 and falling to 17th-ranked Clemson 5-2. Virginia Tech is led by a pair of ranked sophomores. Amerigo Contini, ranked 28th in singles, is 20-8 on the season, including a 13-5 record in the No. 1 spot in dual matches. Andreas Bjerrehus is ranked 120th in singles and has posted a 20-9 mark on the season.

In doubles, Contini and Bjerrehus are ranked 37th. Bjerrehus and junior Hunter Koontz are also ranked in doubles, coming in at the 69th spot.

Tech’s Joao Monteiro and Florian Nicoud have also been playing well this season. Other than Bjerrehus and Contini, Monteiro is the only Hokie with 20 wins so far this season. Monteiro is 20-11. Nicoud is 17-9 on the season and enters Wednesday on a three-match winning streak.

VCU (13-11, 1-0 A10) enters Wednesday on a two-match losing streak, as they dropped matches to Memphis and Louisville last weekend. The Rams have two players who appear in the national rankings. Senior Alexis Heugas is ranked 64th in the country in singles. In doubles, Heugas and redshirt-junior Nick Jones are ranked 55th.

Wednesday’s match will mark the 26th time that the Hokies and the Rams have met on the court. Tech trails the series 17-7.

The Hokies will return to the court this weekend for a pair of home conference matches. On Friday, April 11, Tech will square off against Wake Forest at 3 p.m. On Sunday, April 13, Tech will face the Wolfpack of N.C. State at 1:30 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
