ATLANTA – The 38th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated the 64th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 5-2 in a battle of the Techs on Friday afternoon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga.

Virginia Tech (11-7, 4-3 ACC) grabbed the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Tech’s duo of Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud gave the Hokies their first victory on the day with an 8-3 win over Will Showers and Colin Edwards in the No. 3 match.

Georgia Tech (7-10, 1-6 ACC) looked to even the doubles match at one apiece in the No. 2, where Nathan Rakitt and Cole Fiegel battled Virginia Tech’s Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro in to a tiebreaker. The Hokies' duo held on, securing the 8-7 (8-6) win and clinching the point.

The Hokies’ Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini, ranked 64th in the country in doubles, also claimed a win, taking the No. 1 with an 8-7 (7-4) win over the Yellow Jackets’ 23rd-ranked pair of Eduardo Segura and Carlos Benito.

In singles, Tech extended its lead to 2-0 as Nicoud notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Georgia Tech’s Showers in No. 5 singles. Hokie freshman Corbett followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Edwards in the No. 6 match, putting Tech up 3-0.

The Yellow Jackets then clawed their way back into the match with wins in No. 1 and No. 4 singles. In the No. 1 match, Georgia Tech’s Rakitt upset the Hokies’ 19th-ranked Contini 7-6 (12-10), 6-1. The loss was only Contini’s fourth loss in dual match play this season. Benito then put the Ramblin’ Wreck within one, as he defeated Monteiro 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles match.

Tech’s 120th-ranked Bjerrehus, who was named the ACC Male Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, clinched the match with a two-set win over Georgia Tech’s Segura. Bjerrehus used a tiebreaker to win both sets, winning the first set 7-6 (7-5) and then taking the second 7-6 (7-4).

In the final singles match, Tech’s Koontz needed three sets to top Fiegel in the No. 3 match. Koontz won the first set 6-1. Fiegel grabbed the second set 6-3, before Koontz won the determining set 7-6 (7-1).

The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday at 1 p.m., as they take on the 17th-ranked Clemson Tigers at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Complex in Clemson, S.C.
