BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team, ranked 44th in the nation, will head to 6th-ranked Notre Dame for the Hokies second conference match of the season on Friday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind.

The Hokies (7-3, 1-0 ACC) are coming off of a home doubleheader on Tuesday in which they picked up wins over James Madison and St. Bonaventure.

Notre Dame (10-3, 0-1 ACC) will be the fifth ranked opponent that Tech has faced so far this season. The Hokies are 2-2 against ranked opponents, including wins over Yale and Tulsa. The Fighting Irish suffered a 4-2 loss to Virginia in their only conference match this season.

Virginia Tech is led by a pair of nationally-ranked sophomores. Amerigo Contini, ranked 34th, has compiled a 7-2 record in No. 1 singles in dual matches and is riding a four-match winning streak into Friday’s competition. The other ranked Hokie is Andreas Bjerrehus, who is ranked 116th. Tech’s Hunter Koontz has also been playing well as of late. The junior has won his last six singles matches.

The Irish also have two players ranked in singles. Senior Greg Andrews is ranked 28th and has defeated four ranked opponents so far this season. Freshman Josh Hagar, ranked 124th, is 8-2 in dual match singles action this season. Notre Dame’s doubles pair of Andrews and sophomore Alex Lawson is also ranked 11th nationally.

Friday’s matchup will mark the seventh meeting between Virginia Tech and Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish have the edge in the series, defeating the Hokies in four of the six previous matches.

Tech will return to the court on Wednesday, Mar. 12 with a rare west coast trip to Seattle, Wash. to face off against the Washington Huskies.
