BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 41st-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
The Hokies (4-2) earned the doubles point with wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Jai Corbett and Joao Monteiro tallied the first Tech victory, defeating Jabor Al-Mutawa and Ted Nilsson 8-3 in the No. 2 match. Amerigo Contini and Florian Nicoud sealed the point for the Hokies in No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 win over Coastal Carolina’s (3-3) Rick Timmerman and Garik Yedigarian.
In No. 1 doubles, the 49th-ranked duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz, who played together for the first time in a dual match this season, topped Leo Christofides and Philippe Tsangaridis 8-6.
Virginia Tech’s Koontz put the Hokies up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 over Yedigarian in No. 3 singles. Corbett followed with a victory in No. 6 singles, topping Hunter Whalen 6-4, 6-1.
The Hokies’ 122nd-ranked Aaron Gomez clinched the match in No. 5 singles, beating Al-Mutawa 6-2, 6-3. Monteiro extended Tech’s lead to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Christofides in No. 4 singles. Tech’s 60th-ranked Bjerrehus earned a win in No. 2 singles, defeating Coastal’s Nilsson 6-3, 6-3.
In the final match of the day, Tech’s 26th-ranked Contini capped off the sweep for the Hokies as he earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tsangaridis.
Virginia Tech returns to the court Saturday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. at Boston College.
