No. 37 Virginia Tech to compete in ITA Kick-Off Weekend
Hokies travel to Norman, Okla., facing No. 9 Oklahoma on first day

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will travel to Norman, Okla. to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 25-26. The 37th-ranked Hokies will square off against the ninth ranked Oklahoma Sooners, who are hosting the event, in the opening round.

The other opening round match pits No. 24 Tulsa against No. 31 Northwestern.

Across the four teams participating in the competition, there are nine nationally-ranked singles players, including three Hokies. No. 26 Amerigo Contini, No. 60 Andreas Bjerrehus, and No. 122 Aaron Gomez are all 2-0 in dual matches this season for Tech.

Oklahoma has four ranked singles players with No. 5 Guillermo Alcorta, No. 6 Axel Alvarez Llamas, No. 37 Andrew Harris, and No. 40 Dane Webb, while Northwestern and Tulsa each have one ranked singles player. Northwestern’s Sam Shropshire is ranked 114th, and Tulsa’s Carlos Bautista is ranked 71st.

Virginia Tech and Oklahoma also have two ranked doubles pairs. For the Hokies, Bjerrehus and Contini are ranked 23rd and are 2-0 on the year in dual matches. Bjerrehus is also ranked with Hunter Koontz at 49th. The Sooners have two doubles pairs ranked in the top 25 with the No. 18 tandem of Harris and Webb and the No. 25 duo of Nick Papac and Llamas.

In the fall, Virginia Tech’s Bjerrehus and Contini lost to Oklahoma’s Harris and Webb 8-2 in the ITA Men’s All-American tournament.

The Hokies opened this season last weekend with wins over No. 59 Yale (7-0) and Davidson (6-1).

Competition will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday with Tulsa versus Northwestern. The Hokies will face Oklahoma afterwards at 3 p.m. The losers from Saturday’s matches will play at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the consolation match. The winners will face off afterwards in the championship at 3 p.m.
