BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team started off the 2014 season strong with a 7-0 win over 59^th-ranked Yale in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

The Hokies got off to a hot start in doubles as Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro defeated Patrick Chase and Kyle Dawson 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles match.

The No. 3 pair of Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud clinched the doubles point for the Hokies after topping Daniel Faierman and Alex Hagermoser 6-4.

The 23^rd-ranked pair of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini had the lead on Tyler Lu and Martin Svenning in No. 1 doubles before the match was stopped due to the new ITA “clinch” rules.

Virginia Tech then made quick work of the Bulldogs in singles as all six Hokies won their matches in two sets. Corbett gave the Hokies their first singles point with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Zachary Krumholz on court six.

Bjerrehus, ranked No. 60, then put Tech up 3-0 after he defeated Yale’s Svenning 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.

Koontz clinched the match for the Hokies after coming from behind in both sets to top Faierman 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

Monteiro extended Tech’s lead to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dawson in No. 4 singles. Aaron Gomez, ranked No. 122, followed that up with a 6-2, 6-5 (7-3) win over Photos Photiades in No. 5 singles.

In No.1 singles, Tech’s 26^th-ranked Contini defeated Lu 6-5 (7-4), 6-4 to complete the sweep.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court this afternoon in a 3 p.m. match against Davidson at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
