BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team has earned a preseason ranking of 38th while sophomores Amerigo Contini, Andreas Bjerrehus and Aaron Gomez earn singles recognition. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has also tabbed Contini, Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz in the doubles standings as announced this week by the organization.

Contini is ranked 23rd in singles while Bjerrehus has earned a ranking of 60th. Gomez rounds out Tech’s singles standings at 122nd. In doubles, Contini and Bjerrehus come in at 23rd while Bjerrehus is also ranked with Koontz in 49th.

Contini had a strong fall campaign, finishing with a 7-3 mark and picking up wins over No. 11 Marcos Giron (UCLA), No. 21 Nathan Pasha (UGA) and No. 115 Justin Shane (UVA). The only losses for Contini during the tournament competition were to players ranked ninth, 17th and 43rd in the preseason standings. Contini finished last season with a 28-12 overall record, earning ACC Freshman of the Year honors and representing the Hokies in the NCAA Singles Tournament. He finished the season ranked 67th.

Bjerrehus also turned in a solid fall, tallying a 9-2 record and securing wins over No. 43 Jordan Daigle (UVA) and No. 116 Michael Alford (Florida). Last season, Bjerrehus finished with 30-12 overall record, was tabbed to the All-ACC team and finished 94th in the final singles standings.

Gomez finished the fall with a 5-4 record and posted a win over Maksim Kan of No. 19 Wake Forest. During the 2013 season, Gomez tallied a 13-8 overall record including 7-3 in duals, securing points in matches against No. 8 Kentucky, No. 46 Middle Tennessee and No. 55 Miami.

Contini and Bjerrehus paired up in the fall for a 7-5 record, representing the Hokies on the national scene at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships as well as the ITA Men’s All-American Championships. The duo claimed wins over doubles teams from No. 5 USC, No. 73 George Washington, No. 7 Duke and No. 19 Wake Forest. The pair had a strong 2012-13 season, tallying a 19-9 overall record to finish the season ranked 37th.

Bjerrehus and Koontz paired up for just one event in the fall, winning the UVA Ranked +1 doubles red flight title. The Hokie duo defeated doubles teams from No. 1 Virginia and No. 47 Louisville en route to the title. Koontz and Bjerrehus paired up in the latter part of last season, finishing with a 4-2 record in the No. 1 and earning a ninth place regional ranking.

The Hokies will open the 2014 dual season on Sunday, Jan. 19 as Tech hosts a doubleheader. First match is against Yale and will begin at 10 a.m. while the second match is slated for 4 p.m. against Davidson. Both matches will played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
