CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshmen Florian Nicoud and Jai Corbett claimed the doubles title for the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team at the College of Charleston Last Chance Fall Invitational on Saturday in Charleston, S.C.
The Tech duo won three matches en route to the title, defeating three of the host school’s doubles pairs. In the first round, Nicoud and Corbett defeated Charlie Ghirskey and Matt Daly, 8-7(7).
Nicoud and Corbett downed Stephen Hardy and Alon Faiman, 8-7 in the second round before claiming an 8-3 win over Rodrigo Encinas and Josh Record in the finals.
In singles action, Corbett also had a pair of wins, defeating CofC’s Garrett Gordon, 7-2, 7-6(5). The Hokies’ freshman also claimed a win over Georgia State’s Robert Schulze, 6-2, 7-6(5).
Nicoud was also strong in singles, securing two wins. Nicoud dropped Hardy, 6-3, 6-1 before defeating Zack Lewis (CofC) with straight set scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Tech’s Rafael Ribas and Nic Wilson recorded singles wins on Saturday. Ribas defeated Georgia State’s Valentin Horvat, 6-2, 6-3, and Wilson took a straight set win against Daly, 6-3, 6-2.
The Hokies will wrap up the Last Chance Fall Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 10.
