BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomores Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini have earned an at-large bid to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and will represent the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team in the doubles field. Competition is slated for Nov. 7-10 at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The field features top players from around the country as automatic bids are given to the champions from each of the 12 Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships as well as the finalists from the ITA All-American Championship.
Bjerrehus and Contini are ranked 17th in the preseason and advanced to the final round at the ITA Atlantic Regional before falling in a closely contested, three-set match against Liberty’s Jorge Azuero and Shea Thomas. The Tech duo also advanced at the All-American, making it in to the quarterfinal round before falling.
The Hokie pair earned a bye in the first round, but will face top-seeded Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese of Tennessee in the second round. Libietis and Reese are ranked No. 1 in the ITA preseason standings and claimed this year’s ITA All-American doubles title.
