Tech finishes second at ITA Regional
Hokies are runners-up in the doubles event

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech men’s tennis sophomores Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus advanced to the ITA Atlantic Region doubles finals for the second consecutive year before falling in the final round on Tuesday at the Burrows Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

The 17th-ranked pair squared off against Liberty’s Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero in the final round. Bjerrehus and Contini battled Thomas and Azuero to three sets. Picking up a 6-4 win in the first set, the Hokies came out in the second set but fell behind early before rallying back to tie it up at 5-5. The Liberty pair held off the Hokies for a 7-5 win in the second. In the final set, the two teams were tied at 3-3, but Thomas and Azuero again held off the Tech duo to secure the set 6-4.

Tech earned a bye in the opening round, but got on the court in the second round, picking up a win over Radford’s Mills and Waase, 8-3. The Hokies defeated Penn State’s pair of Roman Trukjla and Mike Reilly, 8-6. In the quarterfinals Bjerrehus and Contini held on for an 8-7(7) win over George Washington’s Nikita Fomin and Danil Zelenkov. The Hokie pair had to face freshmen Tech teammates Florian Nicoud and Jai Corbett in the semifinals, defeating the Hokie newcomers, 8-2.

The Hokies will be back on the court to wrap up the fall tournament season, Nov. 8-10 at the Charleston Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
