Hokies advance to doubles finals at ITA Regional
Contini and Bjerrehus move on to Tuesday’s final round

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech’s 17th-ranked doubles team of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini advance to the ITA Atlantic Regional finals after winning on Monday in the semifinal round at the Burrows-Burleston Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

The Virginia Tech duo paired up in the semifinal round, facing their freshmen Tech teammates Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud. Bjerrehus and Contini defeated Corbett and Nicoud, 8-2.

The Hokies advance to play Liberty’s pair of Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero in Tuesday’s final round. The Liberty tandem defeated Penn State’s Russell Bader and Alex Fennell, 8-3 in the semifinals.

Tech also took to the court in the quarterfinals of singles on Monday. Joao Monteiro fell to UVA’s 46th-ranked Ryan Shane, 6-1, 6-4.

No. 66 Bjerrehus battled against George Washington’s 94th-ranked Francisco Dias to three sets. Bjerrehus fell behind early in the first set, but came back to win in the tiebreaker, 7-6(10). In the second set the two went to a tiebreaker again with the GW player coming out on top, 7-6(6). Dias held on in the final set to secure the match, 6-3.

The final round of singles and doubles will be played simultaneously on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Both the doubles and singles finals will be a best of three sets format.
