BLACKSBURG, Va – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to host the 2013 ITA Atlantic Regional beginning Thursday, Oct. 14 and running through Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
The Hokies will welcome 21 teams with over 100 student-athletes to the six-day event on the Virginia Tech campus. Joining Tech in the tournament is Bucknell, Delaware, Duquesne, George Mason, George Washington, Georgetown, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Morgan State, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, St. Joseph’s, Temple, UMBC, VCU and Virginia.
Virginia Tech has eight players competing in the singles main draw with No. 43 Amerigo Contini, No. 66 Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz each seeded in the top-16 at second, seventh and fourteenth, respectively. Joao Monteiro and Jai Corbett are seeded in the 17-32 draw. Aaron Gomez, Florian Nicoud and Rafael Ribas are also slated to compete in the main draw. Nic Wilson will be on the court first for the Hokies this weekend as he kicks things off in Thursday’s qualifying round.
The Hokies are also seeded in the doubles event with Contini and Bjerrehus teamed up for the No. 2 seed. The pair is currently ranked 17th in the ITA standings. Koontz and Monteiro have earned the seventh seed going in to the weekend’s competition. Contini and Bjerrehus won the regional doubles title last season and are looking to defend that crown in 2013.
The schedule for the weekend is as follows:
Thursday, Oct. 17: Noon – Two rounds of qualifying singles
Friday, Oct. 18: 9 a.m. – First round of main draw singles and one round of doubles.
Saturday, Oct. 19: 9 a.m. – Two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. The singles round will be played in between the two rounds of doubles.
Sunday, Oct. 20: 10 a.m. – One round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles.
Monday, Oct. 21: 10 a.m. – Doubles semifinals followed by singles quarterfinals and semifinals.
Tuesday, Oct. 22: 10 a.m. – Finals of both singles and doubles.
