CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued strong play on Saturday at the UVA Fall Classic at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
Jai Corbett claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win over College of Charleston’s Rodrigo Encino in the semifinals of the blue singles back draw. Corbett advances to Sunday’s finals to face Alex Sydne of Cornell.
In the orange singles, Aaron Gomez defeated Max Kon of Wake Forest in three sets. After falling in the opening set, 6-0, Gomez rallied back to take the next two sets 6-4, 10-3. Gomez will play for fifth place during the final day.
Tech’s Florian Nicoud battled in the semifinals of the gold singles draw against Princeton’s Dan Davies. Falling 6-3 in the first set, Nicoud came back to win 6-1 in the second set. Davies held on in the final set for the 6-4 win. Nicoud moves in to the third place bracket for the final day.
In doubles action, Nic Wilson and Rafael Ribas teamed up for a pair of wins on Saturday. The pair opened the day with an 8-5 decision over Maxi Branth and Niels Kathol of JMU in the gold doubles. The Tech pair continued with a victory in the back draw finals as they defeated Coastal Carolina’s Roman Samed and Rick Timmerman, 8-7.
The final day of competition at the UVA Fall Classic will get started at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
