CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team opened the UVA Fall Classic on Friday with wins in singles and doubles at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Tech newcomer Florian Nicoud picked up a pair of wins in the gold singles flight to advance to the quarterfinal round. In the first match, Nicoud downed George Mason’s Conor Moran with straight set scores of 6-1, 6-3. Nicoud continued his solid play in to the second match of the day as he secured the 7-6, 6-0 win over William & Mary’s John Banks.

The Hokies’ Aaron Gomez also opened the day with a win after battling Penn State’s Nika Dolidize in the orange singles. After falling behind 6-1 in the first set, Gomez came back to win the next two sets with scores of 6-3, 6-3. In the second round, Gomez fell to William & Mary’s Ben Guthrie, 6-4, 6-4.

Nic Wilson secured a win for the Hokies in the opening round, shutting out Matt Daly from College of Charleston, 6-0, 6-0 in the black singles. Wilson had to retire in the second set of the second round match to VCU’s Wider Pimentel.

In the blue singles, Tech’s Jai Corbett fell in the first round to Radford’s Nick Sayer in a three set battle, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Corbett came back in the back draw to defeat Binghamton’s Robin Lesage, 6-2, 6-2.

Rafael Ribas dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the first round against Liberty’s Jorge Azuero. In the back draw, Ribas downed Daniel O’Connor of George Washington in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-3.

The Hokies also advanced in doubles as Corbett and Nicoud teamed up in the blue doubles to defeat George Mason’s Jimmy Lange and Joe Hill, 8-6.

Tech will be back on the court on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
