BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomores Andreas Bjerrehus, Amerigo Contini and Joao Monteiro along with junior Hunter Koontz are set to represent the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team at the 2012 ITA Men’s All-American, beginning Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of University of Tulsa.
Monteiro will be on the court first for the Hokies in the prequalifying singles draw, beginning on Saturday. He will face off against Illinois State’s Muddappa Appanaevanda.
Koontz and Bjerrehus will begin competition on Sept. 30 in the qualifying draw. Bjerrehus brings an ITA ranking of 66th into the tournament. The 43rd-ranked Contini qualified for the main draw and will be on the court, Oct. 3.
Contini and Bjerrehus also qualified for the main draw in doubles. The duo is ranked 17th in the ITA standings and advanced to the ITA national tournament last fall after winning the Atlantic Regional.
Top collegiate players from around the country are competing in the nine-day event. Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 7-10, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.
