Tech wins doubles, moves in to singles finals at UVA Ranked+1
Hokies continue success during second day of tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued its success during the second day of the UVA Ranked+1 as Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz claimed the flight doubles title on Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Bjerrehus along with fellow sophomore Amerigo Contini also moved in to their respective singles flight finals, which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Koontz and Bjerrehus paired up in the red doubles flight. The duo had a bye for Friday’s opening round, but hit the court strong today to take the win over host team UVA’s duo of Ryan Shane and Jonathan Cornish, 8-6.

In the finals, Bjerrehus and Koontz defeated Louisville’s Albert Wagner and Alex Gornet, 8-2.

Bjerrehus, who is ranked 66th in the ITA singles standings, defeated Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt in straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the finals. Bjerrehus will face off against UVA’s Luca Corintelli in Sunday’s finals.

Tech's 43rd-ranked Contini battled for three sets in the semifinals of the white singles flight against 117th-ranked Justin Shane of UVA. The Cavalier player picked up the 6-3 win in the opening set. In the second set, Contini came back to win 6-3 and followed that up with a third set shutout, defeating Shane 6-0.

In Sunday’s final round, Contini will face UNC’s Ronnie Schneider who is the fifth ranked newcomer by the ITA.

Competition will continue on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
