BLACKSBURG, Va. – Amerigo Contini, Andreas Bjerrehus, Joao Monteiro and Hunter Koontz will take to the court this weekend for the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team at the UVA Ranked+1 Invitational, Sept. 20-22 at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
Sophomores Contini and Bjerrehus enter their first fall tournament ranked in the preseason ITA standings. Contini is ranked 43rd in singles after tallying a 28-12 overall record last season while Bjerrehus is ranked 66th after posting a 30-12 mark in 2012-13.
The duo is also ranked in doubles at 17th, finishing last season with an 18-10 overall record, including 13-6 in the No. 1 doubles.
Monteiro and Koontz competed last weekend at the Southern Intercollegiates. All four Tech student-athletes have been selected to the field for the upcoming ITA All-American Championships.
This year’s tournament features 16 players ranked in the ITA top-125 this season. Joining the Hokies and the ‘Hoos at the tournament are players from Binghamton, Elon, George Washington, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan, NC State, North Carolina, UNC Wilmington, VCU and Wake Forest. The tournament features four singles draws and four doubles draws with each school allowed to bring one unranked participant for each ranked participant.
Competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.
