Gomez advances to quarterfinals at Southern Intercollegiates
Sophomore Aaron Gomez will play in flight quarterfinals on Sunday

ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia Tech men’s tennis sophomore Aaron Gomez advanced to the Division II singles flight on Saturday at the 46th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Gomez picked up win early in the day, defeating Winthrop’s Peter Nagovnak, 6-3, 6-3. The Tech player followed that up with a win over Richard Meade of Florida Atlantic. Gomez and Meade battled to three sets with Gomez dropping the first one 6-3. The two went back and forth in the second set, but Gomez picked up the 7-5 win and went on to take the third set 6-1.

Gomez advances to Sunday’s quarterfinals to face Alabama’s Andrew Goodwin.

In the consolation brack of the Division I flight, Joao Monteiro downed Vanderbilt’s Jeffery Offerdahl in three sets, winning the first set 6-4. Offerdahl came back to claim the second set, 6-3, but Monteiro secured the win with a 1-0 (10) victory in the third.

Tech’s Nic Wilson also picked up a win in the consolation bracket of the Division III flight, shutting out Clemson’s Ryan McMullan, 6-0, 6-0.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Sept. 14 in Athens, Ga.
