ATHENS, Ga. - The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team wrapped up day one of the 46th Annual Southern Intercollegiates on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The Hokies advanced in four singles matches and a doubles match during the first day of competition.
Junior Hunter Koontz picked up a win over Charlotte’s Jack Williams in the Division I singles flight. Koontz downed Williams in straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-2. He advances to play Georgia’s Nick Wood on Saturday in the round of 32.
In the Division II singles flight, the Hokies picked up a pair of wins. Sophomore Aaron Gomez battled against Tony Kostadinov of Georgia Gwinnett. After falling 6-4 in the first set, Gomez rallied back to win the next two, 7-5, 6-3. Tech newcomer Florian Nicoud also had a three-set battle in the flight, defeating Stetson’s Chester Espie, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Rafael Ribas defeated Joao Pagan of Mercer, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the Division III singles flight.
On the doubles side, Joao Monteiro paired up with Nicoud in the Division I flight. The pair had a first round bye before facing off against Hernan Hatem and Erik Moberg of Georgia Gwinnett in the second round. The Tech duo downed the Grizzlies, 8-6.
The Hokies will be back on the court Saturday for two rounds of singles and a round of doubles. Matches will begin at 8 a.m. with doubles.
