BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will open the 2013 fall slate over the weekend at the 46th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Sept. 13-16 the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. First round matches will begin on Friday with the flight championships being held on Monday.
The four-day event will feature 170 participants from 28 different schools competing in three singles divisions and two doubles divisions.
Competing for Virginia Tech this weekend are junior Hunter Koontz and sophomores Aaron Gomez and Joao Monteiro. Making their first appearances in the Hokies’ uniform are Rafael Ribas, Nic Wilson, Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud.
Other participants in the annual tournament are Georgia, Alabama, Armstrong Atlantic, Barry University, Charlotte, Clemson, College of Charleston, East Tennessee State, Florida Atlantic, Furman, Georgia Tech, Georgia Gwinnett College, Georgia Southern, Kentucky, Lander, Liberty, Mercer, Murray State, Portland, South Florida, Stetson, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, UAB, UCF, Vanderbilt and Winthrop.
Tech will face a challenge over the weekend as the tournament features five teams that finished in the top-25 in the nation last year including host-team UGA (3), Tennessee (6), Kentucky (9), Vanderbilt (15) and Clemson (21).
