SKILLMAN, N.J. – Virginia Tech men’s tennis sophomores Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus have earned preseason recognition in the 2013-14 preseason rankings as announced on Friday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Contini enters the season ranked 43rd in singles while Bjerrehus holds a ranking of 66th. The pair is also ranked in doubles at 17th.

Contini was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch in 2013 after posting a 28-12 overall record, including a 16-7 mark in duals and a 7-3 record in the No. 1 against ACC foes. The Tech player earned a spot in the 2013 NCAA Singles Championship becoming the first Hokie to do so as a freshman. He finished the season ranked 67th in the ITA.

Bjerrehus was also strong for the Hokies during his freshman campaign, posting a 30-12 overall record with a 16-8 tally in duals. Bjerrehus finished 5-5 in the ACC and was ranked 94th in the final ITA standings last season.

The pair is picked 17th in the preseason doubles standings after finishing last season ranked 37th. The Hokie duo posted an impressive 18-10 overall record, including a 13-6 record in the No. 1 doubles. Contini and Bjerrehus represented the Hokies last season at the ITA Indoor Championships after winning the Atlantic Region title.

Virginia Tech has four players selected to compete at this season’s ITA All-American Championships. Contini and Bjerrehus along with fellow sophomore Joao Monteiro and junior Hunter Koontz have been chosen to the singles field. Contini and Bjerrehus have also been tabbed for the doubles competition.

Contini is the first alternate out of the main draw in singles while Bjerrehus is slated to compete in the qualifying rounds. If unable to move in to the main draw, Contini will compete in the qualifying rounds. Koontz is the third alternate out of the qualifying rounds, but will compete in the pre-qualifying draws if needed. Monteiro is slated for the pre-qualifying draws.

Bjerrehus and Contini are also the first alternates out of the doubles main draw. If not able to move in to the main draw prior to the start of competition, the sophomore duo will compete in the qualifying rounds.

The ITA All-American Championships will be held in Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 28-Oct. 6 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The pre-qualifying rounds will be held, Sept. 28-29 with the qualifying rounds slated for Sept. 30-Oct. 2. The main draw is set for Oct. 3-6.
