BLACKBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech rising junior Hunter Koontz claimed the singles and doubles title on Monday during the final day of competition at the ITA Summer Circuit event hosted by Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
In the first round, Koontz defeated UNCG’s Will Albright in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-0. Koontz followed that up with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Mount St. Mary’s Lou Tonton, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Koontz downed Max Schnur (Columbia) in a three set battle. After winning the opening set 6-3, Koontz was edged in the second, 7-5. The Tech student-athlete came back to win the tiebreaker in the third set, 10-7. Koontz defeated Columbia’s Eric Rubin, 6-3, 6-4 to move into the finals.
Koontz faced Harrison O’Keefe, who is ranked 24th by tennisrecruiting.net, in the finals, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Koontz paired with Schnur, who is also from the Richmond area, to win the title. The pair downed Harrison Richmond (UVA) and Rubin, 9-7 to take the title.
The tournament was one of four being hosted this summer in the Mid-Atlantic region. Nine other regions hosted four events each. The tournaments ultimately lead up to the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Ind. in August.
