URBANA, Ill. – Virginia Tech freshman Amerigo Contini was eliminated Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship at Kahn Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill.

Contini, ranked 61st nationally, squared off against Princeton’s 15th-ranked Matija Pecotic in the opening round. The two went back and forth in the opening set as Contini forced the tiebreaker, but the Tigers’ senior held on for a 7-6(5) win. In the second set, Pecotic got out to an early lead in the count to secure the match, 6-3.

Contini wraps up his first season with the Hokies after a strong rookie campaign. He was named the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year and was recognized as the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch. The Parma, Italy native finishes with a 28-12 overall record, including 16-7 in duals. Contini posted a 9-6 mark at the No. 1 singles and was 7-1 in the No. 2. Contini recorded six wins this year over nationally ranked opponents.
