URBANA, Ill. – Virginia Tech freshman Amerigo Contini will open the 2013 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday, May 22 at 1 p.m. against Princeton’s Matija Pecotic in Urbana, Ill. at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Contini enters the championship ranked 61st in the ITA singles standings while Pecotic is 15th.
The Hokies’ No. 1 singles player has tallied a 16-7 record this season in duals and is 28-11 overall. He was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch. Contini is the first Virginia Tech freshman to make an individual tournament since Adam Marchetti represented the Hokies in 1998 at the doubles event with his brother Aaron.Pecotic posted an overall record of 42-5, including 16-3 in duals this season. He earned his third Ivy League Player of the Year honor this season and is appearing in his second consecutive NCAA singles tournament.
Contini joins a list of 13 former Hokies who have represented Tech at the NCAA singles event.
