BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech men’s tennis freshman Amerigo Contini continues to add to his season accolades as he is named the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch for the 2013 season and now enters the running for the national honor.
Contini was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and will represent the Hokies at the 2013 NCAA Singles Championship. He is the first Hokie freshman to make the NCAA individual events since Adam Marchetti went in 1998 for doubles. Contini joins a list of 13 former Hokies who have competed in the NCAA singles tournament.
The Parma, Italy native posted a 28-11 overall record this season and went 16-y in duals, playing primarily in the No. 1 and No. 2. He tallied a 7-3 record in ACC action. Contini has been ranked in the ITA singles all season and reached a season-high 52nd. In addition, he, along with teammate Andreas Bjerrehus, has been ranked all season in doubles with the pair ranked as high as eighth. The duo posted an 18-10 overall record with a 13-6 mark in duals at the No. 1.
Contini will begin competition at NCAAs beginning May 22. The event is being hosted by the University of Illinois at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill.
