CARY, N.C. – The 42nd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated 11th-seeded Boston College, 4-0 on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 2013 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The Hokies (15-8) took the early lead against the Eagles (5-16), winning the doubles point to start the match. Lucas Oliveira and Joao Monteiro teamed up in the No. 3 to defeat Klaus Puestow and Alexandre Thirouin, 8-5.
Tech sealed the doubles point in the No. 1 match where Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz claimed the 8-2 decision against Philip Nelson and Michael McGinnis.
Virginia Tech kept rolling into singles matches, winning the first point at the No. 3 with Koontz defeating Billy Grokenberger in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 6-1.
The Hokies increased their lead to 3-0 in the match as freshman Joao Monteiro took the match on court four with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Kyle Childree.
Tech secured the team win in the No. 1 singles with 57th-ranked Amerigo Contini defeating Philip Nelson, 6-3, 6-1.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday, April 26 in the quarterfinal round of action at 3 p.m. when they take on No. 3 seed Wake Forest. The 24th-ranked Deacs outlasted Tech 4-3 during the regular season.
