BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 42nd-ranked Virginia Tech men's tennis team will open the 2013 ACC Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 25 at 3 p.m. against 11th-seeded Boston College at the Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park.
The Hokies (14-8, 6-4 ACC) defeated the Eagles (5-15, 0-10 ACC) 7-0 during the regular season. Winner will advance to face No. 3 seeded Wake Forest in the second round on Friday, April 26.
Tech was last seeded sixth in 2011 when the Hokies advanced out of the first round with a 4-3 win against NC State.
Virginia Tech has had two freshmen ranked throughout the season in singles and doubles. Andreas Bjerrehus (#102) and Amerigo Contini (#57) have held rankings in the singles poll all season. Bjerrehus is 14-7 in duals while Contini holds a 15-5 record. In doubles, the pair has been ranked as high as eighth and are 13-6 in the No. 1, currently holding a ranking of 27th. Hokie freshman Joao Monteiro has also been solid for Tech throughout the spring season, totalling a 10-4 record in duals.
In addition to the newcomers, Tech returnees have been strong this season. Sophomore Hunter Koontz has posted an 11-9 record this spring and senior Lucas Oliveira has recorded a 12-9 record in singles action.
Boston College's Kyle Childree has posted a 7-12 record in spring duals while Matt Waganer is 8-12. Billy Grokenberger is adding a 6-10 mark for the Eagles.
