BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 54th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will take to the road for a pair of tough matches to face No. 1 ranked Virginia on Thursday, March 28 at 3 p.m. followed by 30th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m.

Virginia Tech (11-3, 2-1 ACC) split decisions last weekend, defeating No. 70 North Carolina, 4-3 before falling to No. 8 Duke 7-0.

The Hokies’ Amerigo Contini moved up 18 spots to 55th in the ITA singles standings after defeating 35th-ranked Esben Hess-Olsen of UNC last weekend. Contini also forced Duke’s 10th ranked Henrique Cunha to three sets before being edged. Andreas Bjerrehus also moved up 10 places in the standings to 81st after securing a win against UNC’s 113th-ranked Nelson Vick. Bjerrehus also battled to three sets against Duke’s 27th-ranked Fred Saba before falling.

Contini and Bjerrehus are also ranked on the doubles side at 20th. The two won against the North Carolina pair in the No. 1 match. Against the Blue Devils, Contini and Bjerrehus were edged in a tiebreaker to the nation’s top ranked pair of Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler.

Virginia (13-0, 2-0 ACC) enters the match as the top-ranked team in the country. UVa defeated North Carolina 6-1 and Duke 4-3 last weekend. The Cavaliers have six players ranked in the singles standings. Alex Domijan holds the top spot with teammate, Jarmere Jenkins just behind ranked 2nd in the ITA. Max Styslinger is 16th while Mitchell Frank holds the 27th spot. Ryan Shane and Harrison Richmond round out the rankings at 39th and 72nd, respectively.

The Cavaliers also have three teams ranked in doubles. Jenkins and Styslinger have teamed up for a 2nd place standing in the ITA. Domijan and Frank are 9th while Shane and Julen Uriguen hold the 31st place spot in the standings.

VCU (15-4, 2-0 A-10) is ranked 30th in the latest ITA standings and is coming off a 6-1 win over Charlotte the last time out. The Rams are led by Max Wennakoski who is ranked 23rd in singles and has an 8-1 record in duals. Alexis Huegas is ranked 74th with a 6-3 mark in duals.

Huegas has also paired up with Dylan McCloskey in doubles this season as the duo is ranked 24th in the doubles standings. Jamie Vazquez Catoira and Alejandro Argente are ranked 58th with a 7-0 mark in dual play.

The Hokies will remain on the road next weekend, making a swing through North Carolina to face NC State and Wake Forest.
