BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 65th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to play 54th-ranked Old Dominion on Monday, March 11 in a 6 p.m. match at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, Va.
Boonsboro Country Club is sponsoring the match that they look to make a yearly event between Virginia Tech and teams from around the country. The two teams will compete for the Hill City Cup.
The Hokies (7-3) are coming off a 7-0 sweep of James Madison the last time out as Tech won all three doubles and all six singles matches. Tech’s freshmen duo of Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus bring an ITA ranking of eighth and an 8-0 record in the No. 1 in to Monday’s match.
Contini is also 68th in the singles rankings with a 7-1 mark on the season while Bjerrehus is 74th and has a record of 8-1. Lucas Oliveira has posted a dual’s record of 7-2 this season while Hunter Koontz is 5-4. Trpimir Kujundzic is 4-3 in the spring season.
Old Dominion (10-3) is on a six match win streak and last defeated Texas-San Antonio, 7-0. The Monarchs claimed all nine matches against the Roadrunners. The Monarchs’ Carlos Lopez Villa and Can Cetinel are ranked 58th in the ITA doubles standings.
Villa also has a 13-0 record on the season in singles, playing in the No. 1. Wesley Barrett and Zvonimir Podvinski are 9-3 while Albert Ochagavia has tallied a 8-4 mark in the spring.
Following Monday’s match, the Hokies return home to open the ACC slate, hosting Boston College on Sunday, March 17 at Noon.
