BLACKSURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team battled past Penn State for a 4-3 win as the deciding point was clinched in the final match at the No. 1 on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
Fifteenth-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini grabbed the first doubles win of the day for Tech as they defeated Russell Bader and Guanha Chen 8-3 at No. 1
The Nittany Lions countered at No. 2 as C.J. Griffin and Brian Welnetz topped Hunter Koontz and Lucas Oliveira 8-5.
The Hokies claimed the doubles point at No. 3 as Trpimir Kujundzic served an ace to give the Tech team of Kujundzic and Marko Lovrinovic the tiebreak win over Tomas Hanzlik and Roman Trklija 8-7 (4).
Tech opened the singles scoring as Oliveira defeated Chris Young 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Penn State quickly answered, though, with Bader defeating Tech’s Koontz 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. The Nittany Lions evened the score at two as Matt Barry defeated Aaron Gomez 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
Contini rallied to defeat Tomas Hanzlik 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 and give the Hokies a 3-2 lead heading in to the final two matches, both of which went in to three sets.
In consistent fashion, Penn State evened the score as Trkulija defeated Tech’s Kujundzic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 5.
The match came down to the No. 1 match where Tech’s Bjerrehus defeated Welnetz 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 and gave Tech the win.
The Hokies return to action February 15 to take on St. Bonaventure in Blacksburg.
