BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Jan. 25-26 in Durham, N.C. Tech will square off against No. 37 Northwestern at 2 p.m. on the opening day of 2013 event, hosted by Duke University.
Duke enters the event ranked fifth and will face No. 46 Middle Tennessee State on the first day of competition.
In singles, 10 ranked players will compete in the field including Virginia Tech’s No. 29 Andreas Bjerrehus and No. 56 Amerigo Contini. Bjerrehus is 2-0 in duals, playing in the No. 1 while Contini is 1-0 in the No. 2.
The Blue Devils have six players ranked with No. 11 Henrique Cunha, No. 14 Michael Redlicki, No. 23 Fred Saba, No. 38 Rafael Hemmeler, No. 43 Chris Mengel and No. 123 Jason Tahir. MTSU is represented by No. 101 Ben Davis while Northwestern has No. 108 Raleigh Smith.
Tech is also ranked in doubles with the No. 15 duo of Bjerrehus and Contini. The Hokies’ duo are 2-0 on the season in the No. 1. Duke has all three doubles teams ranked and are led by the top-ranked pair of Cunha and Hemmeler.
The Hokies opened the season last weekend with wins over College of Charleston (6-1) and Longwood (7-0).
Competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday with Duke versus Middle Tennessee State. The Hokies will face Northwestern afterwards at 2 p.m. The winners from Friday’s matches will advance to Saturday and will play at 6 p.m. while the consolation match will be at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
