Tech defeats College of Charleston, 6-1 in second match
The 43rd-ranked Hokies win both matches on opening weekend

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 43rd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up a win in its second match of the day, defeating College of Charleston, 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

Tech got out to an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. The Hokies’ 15th-ranked duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini clinched an 8-1 decision in the No. 1 against CofC’s Brice Allanic and Sebastian Lopez.

Virginia Tech’s duo of Mauricio Antun and Trpimir Kujundzic secured the point with an 8-2 decision in the No. 3, defeating Matt Daly and Billy Kenny. Lucas Oliveira and Hunter Koontz completed the doubles sweep for the Hokies with an 8-5 win against Charlie Ghirskey and Alon Faiman.

In singles, the Hokies took a 2-0 lead as Koontz claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win over the Cougars’ Crescente Lesser. Tech went on top 3-0 with a win in the No. 4 where Oliveira defeated Ghirskey in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Tech’s 29th-ranked Bjerrehus secured the team win with a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the No. 1, defeating Allanic.

Antun put the Hokies on top 5-0 with a win in the No. 6 as he dropped Josh Record, 6-2, 6-3. Virginia Tech’s 53rd-ranked Contini battled with Lopez to three sets. After winning the opening set, 6-3, Contini fell 6-2 in the second. The Tech freshman rallied in the deciding set to secure the match, 6-4.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Jan. 25-26 when they travel to Durham, N.C., to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Duke University.
