BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team got the 2013 campaign off to a strong start, defeating Longwood 7-0 on Saturday morning at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
The Hokies claimed the doubles point early with wins in all three matches. Mauricio Antun and Trpimir Kujundzic paired up in the No. 3 to defeat James Fudge and Bharani Sankar, 8-1. Tech’s Hunter Koontz and Lucas Oliveira clinched the point with a win in the No. 2 as the pair defeated Longwood’s Edward Beckar and Harry Kelleher, 8-4.
Virginia Tech also won the No. 1 doubles match as 15th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini secured an 8-4 win against Daniel Elston and Giorgi Khmiadashvili.
In singles action, Antun picked up Tech’s second point with a win in the No. 3, defeating Kelleher 6-2, 6-4. Marko Lovrinovic put the Hokies on top 3-0 by defeating Sankar, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles.
Freshman Aaron Gomez clinched the team win for the Hokies by defeating Fudge, 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles.
In the No. 1, Tech’s 29th-ranked Bjerrehus defeated Giorgi Khmiadashvili, 6-1, 6-1 to give the Hokies a 5-0 lead in the match. Kujundzic claimed a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court four, defeating Kelleher. Oliveira rounded out the scoring with a win on court two, downing Elston, 6-1, 6-4.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court this afternoon in a 4 p.m. match against College of Charleston at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
