BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 43rd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will open its spring slate on Saturday, Jan. 19 with a doubleheader at the Burleson-Burrows Tennis Center in Blacksburg. Tech will open the day with a 10:30 match against Longwood followed by a 4 p.m. start against College of Charleston.

Virginia Tech enters the season ranked 43rd and have two freshman who appear in the national standings in both singles and doubles. Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini enter the season ranked 15th in doubles. In the fall, the duo advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championships in doubles after winning the Atlantic Regional event. Bjerrehus is also one of five freshman ranked in the top-30 in singles. He enters the season 29th after claiming three wins over ranked opponents. Contini is 56th and picked up a pair of impressive fall singles wins.

Joining Bjerrehus and Contini in the newcomer class are fellow freshman Aaron Gomez, who went 6-5 in the fall in singles and was 4-5 in doubles, teaming up with several other Hokies.

Returning for Tech this season is Mauricio Antun, Hunter Koontz, Trpimir Kujundzic, Marko Lovrinovic and Lucas Oliveira.

Antun posted an overall record last season of 18-19 in singles and went 5-5 during the fall tournament season. Kujudzic was 23-19 in 2011-12 and recorded a 6-5 fall tournament record. Lovrinovic was 12-5 last season and went 5-8 in the fall. Oliveira played primarily in the No. 2 singles last season, where he tallied a record of 8-12. Koontz saw limited time in singles last season, but appeared primarily in doubles where he teamed up with Kujundzic for a 10-4 duals record in the No. 3. Koontz had a strong fall season however, posting a singles record of 12-4.

Longwood was picked to finish ninth in the Big South while College of Charleston claimed the 2012 Southern Conference title. The Cougars are coached by former Virginia Tech player, Jay Bruner, who earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors in 2000.

Following the opening weekend, the Hokies will be back on the court, January 25-26 in the ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Duke.
