Hokies set to compete at ITA Nationals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshmen Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini are set to represent the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team at the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Bjerrehus and Contini qualified for the event after winning the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional on Oct. 23. The Hokies defeated UVa’s 47th-ranked duo of Justin Shane and Julien Uriguen in the finals with scores of 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-2.

The Hokies duo will face Oklahoma’s Costin Paval and Dane Webb in the second round after both teams received first round byes. Paval and Webb are ranked No. 1 in the ITA preseason doubles standings.

The national tournament features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw. Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the 12 USTA/TIA Division I Regional Championships, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men’s singles quarterfinalists from the ITA Men’s Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

Competition will begin on Thursday at 9 a.m. with the first round of doubles. The second round (round of 16) will follow.
