CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech freshman duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini advanced to the finals of the doubles draw on Monday at the ITA Atlantic Regionals in Charlottesville, Va.
Bjerrehus and Contini defeated UVa’s ranked duo of Alex Domijan and Harrison Richmond in a three-set semifinal round. After faltering 6-3 in the opening set, the Hokie pair came back to take the next two sets with scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Bjerrehus and Contini move on to Tuesday’s finals to play the 47th-ranked pair of Justin Shane and Julien Uriguen of UVa.
In singles, Bjerrehus defeated William & Mary’s Ben Guthrie, 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinal round. In the semifinals he faced UVa’s No. 2 ranked Jarmere Jenkins. The two battled to three sets with Jenkins winning the opening set 6-2. Bjerrehus shut out the top ranked player in the second set 6-0, but Jenkins came back in the third set to secure the match 6-3.
Contini secured a win in the quarterfinals against VCU’s Alexi Huegas with scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. In the semfinals, Contini fell to UVa’s Richmond, 6-0, 6-2.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with the finals of singles and doubles at the Snyder Tennis Complex in Charlottesville, Va. Play is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
