WACO, Texas – Trpimir Kujundzic and Andreas Bjerrehus got off to a strong start for the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team on the opening day of the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate in Waco, Texas.

Kujundzic picked up an opening round win over Stefan Williams of UT Arlington with scores of 6-4, 6-4. In the second round, Kujundzic battled to three sets with Southern Miss’ Andrew Goodwin. After falling behind, 6-4 in the opening set, Kujundzic came back to take sets two and three with tallies of 6-2, 6-3. Kujundzic moves into Saturday’s round of 16.

Bjerrehus also secured a first round win, defeating Rice’s Phillip Seifert in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The Tech player followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Colby Meeks of Midwestern State. With the wins, Bjerrehus advances to the round of 16.

The two Hokies teamed up in doubles to secure a first round 8-3 win against UT Pan Am’s Ricardo Hopker and Sebastian Job. In the second round, Kujundzic and Bjerrehus fell to the Tennessee tandem of Jarryd Chaplin and Edward Jones, 8-6.

Tech also had athletes competing at the UVA Ranked+1 on Friday. Freshman Amerigo Contini fell to 56th-ranked William Kallberg of Ole Miss with scores of 6-3, 7-5 in the Blue Draw. In the Gold Draw, Tech’s No. 96 Lucas Oliveira fell to Ole Miss’ Adrien Skogeng, 7-6(4), 6-4.

After falling in the opening round of the red doubles draw, Contini and Oliveira came back in the consolation bracket to defeat Andrew Gores and Stuart Depaolo of North Carolina, 8-4. The pair advance to the finals of the consolation draw.

Competition will continue at both events on Saturday.
