BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will send athletes to the UVA Ranked+1 in Charlottesville, Va. as well as the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate in Waco, Texas for a pair of weekend tournaments Sept. 21-23.
Tech’s 96th-ranked Lucas Oliveira will travel to the UVa event along with newcomer Amerigo Contini. Oliveira will compete in the gold singles and will face Adrian Skogeng of Ole Miss in the opening round. Contini will square off in the blue singles against No. 56 William Kallberg also of Ole Miss. The Tech duo will pair up in the red doubles to face Louisville’s Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Austin Siegel.
The tournament will feature 64 players with four 16-player draws and four eight-team doubles draws. Joining the Cavaliers and the Hokies are student-athletes from George Washington, Illinois, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina, UNC Wilmington, NC State, Penn State, Radford, VCU, Wake Forest and William & Mary.
Play begins each day at 9 a.m. Friday’s schedule will feature two rounds of doubles followed by a round of singles. Saturday will have one round of doubles and two rounds of singles. Sunday will feature the final round of singles.
Representing the Hokies at Baylor are Andreas Bjerrehus and Trpimir Kujundzic. Bjerrehus got off to strong start in his first tournament as a Hokie, picking up a pair of wins against top-ranked opponents in No. 32 Yannick Maden and No. 17 Bob van Overbeek. Kujundzic is coming off a strong 2011-12 season after finishing with 23-19 overall record.
In addition to Baylor and Tech, teams from DePaul, Idaho, Laredo Community College, Louisiana-Lafayette, Midwestern State, Rice, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Tulsa, UT Arlington, UT-San Antonio and UT-Pan American.
The tournament will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. ET and continue throughout the weekend. It will consist of one 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles bracket.
