CARY, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team wrapped up the first day of competition on Friday evening at the Duke Fab Four Invitational in Cary, N.C. The Hokies tallied a pair of doubles wins on day one.

In the Black Doubles draw, Hunter Koontz and Marko Lovrinovic paired up to defeat Kentucky’s Juan Pablo Murra and Ryuji Hirooka, 8-3 in the first round. The Hokie tandem fell, 8-5, in the second round match to 15th-ranked Fred Saba and Chris Mengel of Duke.

Koontz and Lovrinovic will face VCU’s No. 40 Alexis Heugas and Max Wennakoski in the third place match on Saturday.

Mauricio Antun paired up with Aaron Gomez in the Blue Doubles draw. The pair fell in the opening round to South Carolina’s Thiago Pinheiro and Kyle Koch, 9-8. Tech’s duo moved on to the finals of the consolation draw after downing William & Mary’s Jamie Whiteford and Aaron Chaffee, 8-6.

Antun and Gomez will pair up in the consolation finals against Alabama’s 33rd-ranked Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taborga.

The Hokies had tough first round singles matches as Koontz battled with Louisville’s Michael LIppens in the Blue draw. The two went to three sets with Lippens holding on in the first set for a 7-6(4) win. In the second set, Koontz came back to win 6-4, but Lippens again held on as he took the third set 7-6(3).

Antun also went to three sets, squaring off against Elon’s Stefan Fortmann in the black draw. The Tech player took the first set 6-4, but Fortmann rallied for 6-1, 6-2 wins in the second and third to claim the match.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday at 9 a.m. for the final round of doubles matches. Two rounds of singles matches are slated to follow.
