ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team kicked off the 2012-13 season with several members advancing in singles and doubles on the opening day of the 45th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament in Athens, Ga.

Tech newcomers had a strong day as all three freshmen advanced in their respective singles matches.

Andreas Bjerrehus defeated host team UGA’s Garrett Brasseaux, 6-4, 6-2 in the Division I singles flight. Amerigo Contini also added a victory in the same flight with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex Toliver of Kennesaw State.

In the Division II singles flight, Aaron Gomez claimed a win against UGA’s Will Oliver in a three set battle. Gomez fell in the opening set, 7-5, but rallied back to take the second set, 6-3. In the third set the two went back and forth, forcing the tiebreaker where Gomez held on to win 7-6(5).

Senior Trpimir Kujundzic secured a win in the Division II flight, defeating Michael Beiler of Florida Gulf Coast in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(5). Sophomore Hunter Koontz secured a 6-4, 6-1 win over Liberty’s Egon Samaal.

Fellow sophomore Marko Lovrinovic downed Lipscomb’s John Tougher, 6-0, 6-3 in the qualifying round, but fell to The Citadel’s David Orces in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

In doubles, Mauricio Antun teamed up with Contini in the Division II doubles flight to defeat KSU’s Toliver and Alexander Pena, 8-5. The Tech duo of Gomez and Lovrinovic were set to pair up in Friday’s opening round, but the match was postponed until Saturday due to time.

The second day of competition kicks off at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Center on the University of Georgia campus.
