BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech tennis wrapped up the ITA Summer Circuit Mid-Atlantic event on Monday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
The men’s team had sophomore Hunter Koontz and newcomer Aaron Gomez representing the Hokies over the weekend. Both players advanced to Monday’s semifinals in the men’s open singles before being eliminated.
Fifth-seeded Koontz fell in a close two set match to ninth-seeded Kyle Johnson with scores of 7-6(3), 7-6(2). Gomez was seeded sixth in the tournament and fell to No. 7 seed Harrison Kennedy in three sets. Kennedy took the first set 6-2, but Gomez came back for a 6-1 win in the second set. In the tiebreak the two kept it close before Kennedy held-on for the 10-7 win.
The Tech pair also advanced to the finals in the men’s open doubles after earning the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Koontz and Gomez squared off against No. 1 seeded tandem of Danny Riggs and Kenneth Sabacinski. The Hokie pair fell 8-6.
