Somen and Tocci named to All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech seniors Luka Somen and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci have been named to the 2012 All-ACC Men’s Tennis Academic Team, as announced Thursday by the league office. This year’s honor marks Somen’s fourth consecutive and the second honor for Tocci.

Georgia Tech senior Kevin King has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s 2012 All-ACC Academic Team.

Somen is one of three member’s of this year’s team to have won the honors for the past four seasons. Joining him on that list are Akash Muppidi of Boston College and Georgia Tech’s King.

Somen wrapped up a very successful career with the Hokies, having won 102 singles matches during his career, including a 30-11 overall record this season. He went 16-7 in the No. 1 in spring duals. Somen, a business finance major, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Singles Championships and earned his third consecutive spot on the All-ACC team. He was ranked as high as 25th this season and was named the ITA Atlantic Region Senior of the Year.

Tocci earned the ACC Postgraduate Scholarship this year and was named the ITA Atlantic Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The aerospace engineering major, reached the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships in doubles this year and was ranked as high as 27th nationally with Somen. The pair tallied a 22-15 overall record this season, including a 10-10 mark in the No. 1 doubles.

The 2012 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team features three student athletes who also earned All-America honors this season – King, Duke’s Henrique Cunha and ACC Freshman of the Year Mitchell Frank of Virginia.

The All-ACC Academic Team also includes 11 student-athletes who were All-ACC selections, six that were honored at least once as ACC Player of the Week and eight that have earned All-ACC Academic honors on at least one previous occasion.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.
