Somen advances at NCAA Championships
Tech senior advances to Round of 32

ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia Tech senior Luka Somen had a strong opening day at the 2012 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championships, defeating Florida’s Tripper Carleton in straight sets on Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Somen, ranked 47th in the ITA, defeated 48th-ranked Carleton, 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round match. Tech’s No. 1 singles player advances to face 11th-ranked Wil Spencer of Georgia in the round of 32.

The two met previously this season when the Hokies faced UGA during the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Somen and Spencer played a tough three set match with the Tech player taking the opening set 6-4. Spencer held on in the second set for a 7-6(3) win and took the third set 6-3. Spencer defeated Georgia Tech’s Juan Spir to advance to Thursday's second round.
