CARY, N.C. – The No. 41 Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell to No. 32 Florida State, 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
The Hokies (11-11, 7-4 ACC) fell behind after the Seminoles (17-8, 7-4 ACC) secured the doubles point. Tech’s duo of Patrick Daciek and Lucas Oliveira led Benjamin Lock and Andres Bucaro 7-4 in the No. 2 before the match was halted.
Florida State extended its lead to 2-0 with a win in the No. 2 singles as Blake Davis defeated Daciek, 6-3, 6-1.
Tech got on the board with a win in the No. 1 singles. Luka Somen downed Jordan Kelly-Houston in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 6-4 to cut the Seminoles’ lead to 2-1. FSU went up 3-1 as Jason Zafiros claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win in the No. 6 singles against Tech’s Trpimir Kujundzic.
The Seminoles secured the win in the No. 5 singles where the Hokies’ Mauricio Antun and FSU's Christian Gonzales Mendez battled to three sets. After dropping the first set 6-3, Antun battled back to shutout Mendez in the second set, 6-0. In the third set, the two went back and forth and were tied at six to force the tiebreaker. Mendez held on to secure the match 7-6(11-9) against Antun.
