No. 20 Tar Heels edge No. 68 Hokies, 4-3
Tech claims doubles point and a pair of singles matches

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Tech claimed the doubles point, but No. 20 North Carolina rallied in singles to defeat the 68th-ranked Hokies, 4-3 on Friday afternoon in ACC men’s tennis action at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Tech (6-7, 2-2 ACC) took two of the three doubles matches to get out to the 1-0 lead heading into singles. Tech’s 47th-ranked duo of Luka Somen and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci defeated No. 44 Brennan Boyajian and Oystein Steiro, 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles.

In the No. 3 doubles, Hunter Koontz and Trpimir Kujundzic paired up for an 8-5 win against the Carolina pairing of Cameron Ahari and Esben Hess-Olesen.

The Tar Heels tied the match at 1-1 with a win in the No. 4 singles, but Kujundzic took the No. 6 singles to give the Hokies a 2-1 lead. He defeated Steiro in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-3.

Carolina went up 3-2 after winning the No. 5 and No. 1 matches before the Hokies again tied the match with a win in the No. 3 from Patrick Daciek. The Tech player fell behind to No. 98 Hess-Olesen, 6-2 in the opening set, but Daciek responded to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-2.

The deciding match was the No. 2 singles where the Hokies’ No. 89 Lucas Oliveira fell to Carolina’s No. 90 Boyajian 7-6(0), 6-3.

Tech will remain in the Triangle to face No. 6 Duke on Sunday, March 25 beginning at 1 p.m. in Ambler Tennis Stadium.
