Hokies down Penn State, 6-1
Men's tennis notches win, moves to 2-1 on season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 32 Virginia Tech men’s tennis team secured the doubles point and five singles matches to defeat Penn State, 6-1 on Saturday in a non-conference match in University Park, Pa.

The Hokies (2-1) won two of the three doubles matches to take an 1-0 lead going into singles. Lucas Oliveira and Hunter Koontz teamed up in the No. 2 for an 8-4 win against PSU’s Bryan Welnetz and Christopher Hasyn.

In the No. 3 doubles, Trpimir Kujundzic and Mauricio Antun nabbed an 8-6 decision against Taylor Cohen and Chris Young to secure the point for the Hokies.

Tech increased its lead to 2-0 as Antun defeated Cohen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles and Patrick Daciek’s 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 3 singles against Russell Bader put Tech on top 3-0.

Tech’s No. 71 Oliveira clinched the match for the Hokies with a victory in the No. 2 singles, defeating No. 80 Tomas Hanzlik, 6-3, 7-6(4).

The Hokies’ No. 58 Luka Somen defeated PSU’s Jason Lee in a three set No. 1 match. Lee held on in the first set 7-6(4), but Somen responded in the second and third set with scores of 6-4, 6-3.

Kujundzic tallied a point for the Hokies with a win in the No. 6, downing Hasyn, 6-2, 6-0.

Tech will be back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 11 when the team travels to Boston, Mass. for a 2 p.m. match against No. 66 Harvard. The Hokies will remain in the Boston area to open ACC play against Boston College on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
