BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 34 Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will play its first dual match of the spring season on Sunday, Jan. 29 against No. 39 Nebraska at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Ga.
The match between the Hokies and the Cornhuskers features four players ranked inside the top-80 of the ITA singles standings. Tech has No. 58 Luka Somen and No. 71 Lucas Oliveira. For Nebraska, No. 41 Christoper Aumueller and No. 78 Benedikt Lindheim will take the court.
In doubles, the Hokies’ No. 51 Somen and partner Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci will be in action. Aumueller and Lindheim will also team-up as the No. 7 ranked doubles team. The Cornhuskers’ also have the No. 44 doubles tandem of Andre Stenger and Robert Schulze.
Also making the trip for the Hokies this weekend are Trpimir Kujundzic, who claimed the flight C title at the Larsen Bowker Invitational in the team’s last outing. Patrick Daciek, Mauricio Antun, Marko Lovrinovic, Zach Pine, Jon Pine and Hunter Koontz will also be on hand for the Hokies.
The Hokies will advance to Monday’s match to face either No. 4 Georgia or No. 51 TCU. The Bulldogs have four players ranked in the top-65 of the ITA singles standings and are led by No. 3 Wil Spencer and No. 10 Sadio Doumbia. Ignatio Taboada and Hernus Pieters are No. 26 and No. 64, respectively.
Tech will kick-off the ITA weekend beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday against the Cornhuskers. Monday’s match time will be determined following Sunday’s competition.
