BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team won six singles matches and three doubles matches on the opening day of the Larsen Bowker Invitational hosted by the Hokies at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. Joining the Hokies in the event are players from Columbia, Davidson and Middle Tennessee State.
No. 58 ranked Luka Somen picked up a win for the Hokies in the Flight A singles defeating Columbia’s No. 40 Haig Schneiderman in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-1.
In the Flight B singles, Tech’s No. 71 ranked Lucas Oliveira claimed a 7-5, 6-2 decision over the Lions’ Nathanial Gery, 7-5, 6-2.
The Hokies secured four wins in the C flight as Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci defeated Columbia’s Tizian Bucher, 6-4, 6-3. Tech’s Jonathan Pine defeated Davidson’s Connor Evins, 6-1, 6-1 while Kevin Castellow also picked up a win over a Davidson player with a 6-4, 6-3 decision against Roger Irigoyen.
Marko Lovrinovic claimed a hard fought three set battle against Columbia’s Cyril Bucher in the C flight with a score of 7-6(4) in the opening set. Lovrinovic fell 6-1 in the second set before battling back to secure the match, 6-3.
Tech’s No. 51 pair of Tocci and Somen picked up a win in the Flight A doubles, defeating Columbia’s Gery and Tizian Bucher, 8-5.
The Hokies claimed both B flight doubles matches. Patrick Daciek teamed up with Lovrinovic to defeat Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur, 9-8(2). Mauricio Antun and Trpimir Kujundzic paired up for a win over Columbia’s Bert Vancura and Rajeev Deb-Sen, 8-4.
The format places players into three singles flights and two doubles flights. Flight A singles will be each teams’ No. 1 and 2 seeds. In Flight B will be the No. 3 and 4 seeds and Flight C will have No. 5-8 seeds. There will be no team scoring in the event and winners in each flight will be determined by a point system.
Play will resume on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Hokies will take the court at 4 p.m.
